My Kind Of Football

I have no idea who is playing in today’s Super Bowl, what number Super Bowl this is, I THINK Beyonce is the half-time show, and I think it should be one word not two.  I’ve tried to get into football but no success– maybe when Los Angeles gets a football team I will show some love. (Los Angeles doesn’t have a football team, right?)

My kind of football involves…eating them!

Here is a round up of some delicious and adorable edible footballs, all with recipes that can easily be made vegan.

And this was my post from last year, when I finally figured out who Tim Tebow was and made some chips and dips to munch on while probably not watching the Super Bowl because I think it was already over!

Whether you are rooting for your favorite team today or not, I hope you have a wonderful Sunday!

It’s Month 9!

It’s month 9 of The Yummy Year Project’s second year!

Part of the reason why I came up with the name “The Yummy YEAR Project” was because each year I wanted to give myself a different food goal to try to help me explore the world of vegan food (the other part was to support a different cause each year).  Food is such a huge part of our lives and I want to experience it a little more than my usual eat-with-one-hand-drive-with-the-other-meal-on-the-go or wolfing down my food at a desk and almost choking myself in the process.  I want to appreciate the food I have and learn how to make delicious meals for myself as well as my friends, families, and pets too!

The first year, my goal was to try 365 vegan recipes within a year which was a pretty crazy lofty goal!  I have always been really invested in my baking and cake decorating while cooking kind of took a backseat.  So what better way to get going than basically make myself cook a new thing every day for a year??  Even at about 3 days before the year was about to end, I still thought I could bust the rest of those recipes out lol.  That didn’t happen, but 214 recipes in a year isn’t too bad!

This second year, the original idea was to have a theme each month and use seasonal produce to make dishes that fit into that theme.  I still like the idea of it and it didn’t start off too bad, like back in May when breakfast foods was the theme.  But then I completely fell off the band wagon!  Besides things just getting really hectic and busy, I honestly just wasn’t feeling all that inspired either…and you know what they say, only blog if you want to, not because you feel like you should.  Actually, that applies to just about everything in life!

But I feel the inspiration coming back, and new ideas and a new direction for YYP!  All the energy and enthusiasm from Cards For A Cause has really given me a lot of motivation, and I am excited to start cooking again and getting more involved here!

I am changing up the idea a little bit though for the remainder of this second year.  Instead of themes, I think it’s time I start creating recipes of my own with the wonderful local produce we have each month!  After talking to some very insightful friends, I realized even though I love vegan-izing different recipes and dishes, it’s missing a little bit of me in them– because it’s not really coming from me.  I like that I can provide information, but I really want the food aspect of YYP to feel– for you and me– what it is I feel with Cards For A Cause.  I LOVE the project so much, and have poured my heart and my soul and every bit of energy I have into it since I had the idea!  I want this blog to feel the same way through my cooking, baking, designs, ideas, thoughts, and words.  I want to share more on how fun, easy, and compassionate being vegan can be, how easy it is to get involved in different causes, and how design can be a vehicle for doing good!

So hopefully you will start to see a good change going on over here as I start to put a little– or a lot– more of me into YYP!  I am excited for what’s ahead and to end year two out with a big gigantic bang, with every part of The Yummy Year Project– the food, the philanthropy, and the design!

Cards For A Cause Update, Thoughts, + Thank You!

We are 5 days away until the last day card delivery sign ups are available!  I can’t believe Cards For A Cause started almost a month ago– it seems like yesterday I was drafting my first email to introduce this project to everyone I could get a hold of =)!

Here is an update on where we are currently at:

Which means 125 days left to be sponsored and 5 days left to secure those meals!

You might be wondering how come 138 cards are going to be sent but 240 days of meals are secured?  Isn’t 1 card equal to 1 day?   Yes it is, but we were able to get the most out of the funds because some folks sent checks or gave cash to avoid PayPal fees, some supporters donated but did not sign up for any card deliveries, and others donated more than the number of cards they wanted.

I am so elated and touched by how supportive everyone has been with this fundraiser, whether you are an old friend or new, heard of it through word of mouth or happened to see it on Pinterest!  This is the most funds I have ever raised and I am super excited!

Whether or not the 365 day goal is reached (I hope that it will!) this fundraiser is already a success in so many ways!

First and foremost we are able to provide nutritious meals for the children at The Ebongalethu Educare Center in Motherwell, South Africa.  The “South African Child Gauge 2012” states, “…in the first 1000 days of a child’s life, there is a never-repeated window to fulfill a child’s physical and psychological needs, through nutrition and stimulation, in a way that can have lasting consequences if these needs are unmet. It has been found that investment into early childhood development can do more than practically anything else to alleviate poverty”.

This meal you are feeding them is not just a bowl of porridge for a day, it is a chance at a healthier life,  it is a sense of well-being, it is the knowledge that they are cared for and loved, it is the start they need to become the citizens who will help to end the poverty they were born into– for themselves, for their families, for their communities.  It is the beginning of healthy bodies and minds, ready to learn and grow!

There are many things in life we cannot control or choose, that are predetermined before we even enter this world:  what type of life we will be born into, whether we are born with both parents alive and well, or whether we are born in a time of peace or a time of war.  These babies and toddlers do not have a choice yet of what kind of life they can and will lead, but if we can help their lives develop in a positive way, then I believe we have been successful.

I truly love this project and all aspects of it–making the cards, writing messages that are filled with love, thought, and/or humor, addressing every envelope, talking to the donors, imaging the reactions of the recipients– but most of all, I love the sense of community and connection it represents.  From the card maker, to the card sender, to the card recipient and everyone in between, it couldn’t have happened if those dots had not been connected.

I love that we are able to represent how one person can make a difference without a huge budget or having it be time consuming– all it takes is sending a simple card.

I love that together with all the cards and donations, we have found a way to give to each other and give to others in this world– even though they are oceans away.

I love that we are able to fill many tiny tummies with warm and nutritious meals– and they can spend the rest of their day being kids, laughing, playing, learning, and growing.

I feel like we have been able to create a start, a nudge in the right direction, a swing to start the momentum going for positive change in the world– with endless possibilities!

Thank you for being a part of Cards For A Cause!

Let’s end Cards For A Cause: The Valentine’s Day Edition with a bang– keep on spreading the word, tweeting, pinning, sharing, and I hope to see you at the trunk show!
